Portfolio > Current Work

These last few years have felt like a calamitous rush of discordant chaotic events, and this has led my approach to artmaking to reflect a great deal of seemingly disparate contradictions. My main goals with my paintings are twofold: to reflect my current experience through a complete openness to process, and to balance opposite themes within the work.

I have a checklist on my studio wall that each painting must balance to feel complete. It reads:

Equal parts: Objective v. Non-Objective

Figurative, Landscape, Abstract

Chaotic vs Order

Implied Narrative

Purposeful v Non-Purposeful (Consciousness v Unconscious)

Discordance and Balance

The direction of the paintings is always informed by their making; starting from chaotic lines and splotches of colour, and informed by my daily life. I continuously create imagery and abstract work, then rotate the canvas looking for new opportunities. From this process characters often emerge. They are informed from a lifetime of looking at cartoons and contemporary art. They also mirror my current life raising my kids.
From my experience, there’s enough playfulness from the pop imagery and tension within the chaotic blending of elements it empowers audience members to find their own meaning within the work. While the work stems from personal iconography, what I hope to communicate is tonal. After years of reinvention, I am excited to share this work.
